Keeping kids busy during the Holidays

Tob This time next week, we will be getting ready to celebrate Christmas and New Years, but the kids will be off for a least another week! Oh, how to keep them entertained during the extra time once some of the Christmas present magic wears off.

If you one of the lucky ones to have snow, sledding is fun with your crazy carpet/tube sled or toboggan. Be sure to layer in all the latest winter attire. Grab your skates and hockey stick and pick up a game of hockey with the little ones. Building a snowman is always an option - don't forget the hat and corn cob pipe. Skiing is fun too, whether it be downhill skiing or cross-country skiing!

For those days when it is down right freezing outside, board games or a  Wii, will fill up some time and soon enough the kids will be back to school wanting to tell their friends about their family holiday adventures!

GetItNext Announces Its Newest Blogger - Ogie Ogilthorpe

Ogie_olgilthorpe

GetItNext would like to introduce our newest blogger, Ogie Ogilthorpe.  Since our blogging is a joint effort amongst the GetItNext team we figured we would start blogging under a pseudonym.  So we thought long and hard to find a name we would be proud over.  After about 30 seconds we arrived at Ogie Ogilthorpe from the legendary hockey movie Slapshot.  We figured since we are a North American team that is comprised mostly of hockey fanatics the name would be fitting.

Check out this scene that introduces Ogie.

GetItNext 2008 Devcon Champion

Getitnext_airhockey_2 I received a couple of emails today suggesting that my victory at eBay Devcon, see previous blog Air Hockey Champ, should be taken with a grain of salt (based on the competition).  To my GetItNext team, I challenge ANY of you anytime, any place on the ice, on the table or under the bubble (for those of you non hockey loving people it means, ice hockey, air hockey, bubble hockey).  Yes I agree that beating Ron and Colin is not a big deal but those were the competitors that I faced and I schooled them at their own game.  As of right now the Cup is in Jersey and will remain so for the next year.  So deal with it my northern border, beer loving canuck friends.

GetItNext Air Hockey Champion is an American

Getitnext_air_hockey_3 Hockey is a common bond that the GetItNext team holds near and dear to our hearts, after all we have roots in Canada.  We were mildly surprised to stumble on an air hockey table at the eBay Devcon08 conference in Chicago.  So on Monday night we had a round robin tournament amongst our team at the conference during the Paypal beerbash.  Much to the chagrin of the Canadians the GetItNext 2008 Air Hockey Champion is an American, Matt Williams.  Matt swept the tournament going undefeated with me (Ron Stewart) finishing in 2nd place.  Colin Angel finished in last place, no surprise of course.

MSG HD on Directv - Coming Soon

Msg_hd There has been wild speculation for months about whether Directv is going to add MSG HD or not.  Well here is the latest evidence that indicates that it is only a question of when not if.  Look at the attachment and you will see an MSG HD logo.  Personally I can't wait, as an avid Rangers fan I am sick and tired of watching MSG SD which looks so bad I think its a game from the 80's, oh wait maybe its the way the team is playing.  For the full list of Directv HD channels that are currently available check out my blog: Directv Complete HD Lineup.

If you've tuned to any of these channels and cannot receive them you might not have the proper equipment.  You will need the following in order to receive the new HD channels: a 5 LNB Dish, and one of the following MPEG 4 boxes: a HR-20, HR-21, H-20 or H-21 model.  Without this equipment you will not be able to receive the signal from the new bird.

To find out about all the new Directv HD Channels check out Directv Expansion blogs

NHL Season Preview - Eastern Conference

Nhl_3078_2 The Ducks and Kings split a two game series to start the 07-08 NHL season in London. I personally can't wait for the season to get fully underway, but I can't lie, being a Leaf fan is one tough thing these days. Don't get me wrong, I bleed blue and white and I will forever, but there is going to be some awesome competition this year. Here's what to look out for in the Eastern conference.

Starting in the Atlantic division, I think the teams to beat are going to be the Pittsburgh Penguins and the New York Rangers. There is no going wrong when Sid the Kid is on your side, I mean, the team was very good last year and gave the Senators a decent go in the first round of the playoffs, and they are only going to grow as all their young talent matures. With some more experience being added in the off season (Peter Sykora and Darryl Sydor) I think this Penguins team will be the team to beat in the Atlantic. The Rangers will be right behind them though, giving them a good run for their money. Their acquisition of Chris Drury and Scott Gomez is s30923338ure to add some talent up front and put up some big numbers, hopefully offsetting the loss of Michael Nylander, however, I don't think it will be enough to overcome young talent present in Pittsburgh. Come to think of it though, New York has always (for the last few years) looked good on paper without being able to perform. Last year we saw them actually perform, and hopefully this will continue into this year. Keep your eyes on this division, it is sure to be quite the battle.

As for the Northeast division, not a whole lot has changed (except for in Buffalo with the loss of Chris Drury and Danny Briere). I expect that this division will be similar to how it was last year, except I think Ntnp_20070705_s001_toskaladeflects_my Leafs may have a legitimate shot at the post-season. After going undefeated in the pre-season, I think that the Sens are going come out of the gates real hot this season, and they are definitely the team to beat. After missing the playoffs by one point on the very last day of the season last year, I expect the acquisitions of Jason Blake and Vesa Toskala to help the Leafs at least make it to the playoffs (but I doubt they will go very far). At least for once in Toronto there will be competition for the top goaltending spot, and Raycroft and Toskala will both work extra hard pushing for playing time. I think the team to look out for in the Northeast though is clearly the Senators (I know, it hurts).

Finally, the Southeast division will be interesting to watch as it is very unpredictable. With Michael Nylander in the mix, the Washington Capitals (Ovechkin and all) is expected perform better this year, but without the depth of many other teams, it will be difficult for Washington to go very far. We will see if some of the third and fourth liners on the Caps will be able to complement their top line, and of course, we will see if Olaf Kolzig can pull it together for a half decent year. The team to watch though, will be the Carolina Hurricanes. Despite their very hot/cold nature, I think missing the playoffs last year did this team well and they will be more competitive this year. Cam Ward is the key player here, as goaltending will play a big role in this division. For Carolina's sake, lets just hope that the Conn Smythe winning Ward shows up to play!

I think the division to watch this year though will be the Atlantic division. It will be very exciting to see how the many off-season changes will benefit these teams. Let the games begin! Be sure to stay tuned for my Western Conference predictions as well!
