Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Review - Chapter 3

Harry_potter_and_the_deathly_hallowI continue to be thoroughly impressed with the book so far.  I promised I am going to blog my impressions of the final book chapter by chapter.  However, I'm not intending to give away any plot twists per se and I don't want to ruin the book for others.

Chapter 3 - Dursleys Departing

As Harry's 17th birthday (the age of "adulthood" for wizards) quickly approaches Harry is preparing to leave Privet Drive as the magical protection placed there will end.  At the same time the Durleys are being placed in the wizard equivalent of the witness protection program (which is altogether too funny).  It leads to some funny dialogues between Harry and his not-so-close relatives.

However, in an ironic and touching twist, Dudley in an awkward fashion, thanks Harry for saving him from the Dementors.  It was nice to see that after all he'd been through at least one of the Dursley's appreciated Harry.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Review - Chapter 2

Harry_potter_and_the_deathly_hallowI continue to be thoroughly impressed with the book so far.  I promised I am going to blog my impressions of the final book chapter by chapter.  However, I'm not intending to give away any plot twists per se and I don't want to ruin the book for others.

    Chapter 2 - In Memoriam

Harry is of course once again at the Dursley's for the summer.  As Harry begins packing up his things in preparation for never again having to return to Privet Drive he begins to read the Daily Prophet.  There he reads a lengthy obituary about the life and times of Albus Dumbledore.

Harry's deep affection for Dumbledore and his feeling of lose is palpable and obvious throughout the chapter.  However, this period of mourning quickly turns to outrage when he discovers that Rita Skeeter has written a supposed "tell-all" about Dumbledore that besmirches Dumbledore's good name. However, more importantly it plants a seed of doubt in Harry.  Did he REALLY know Dumbledore?  Then he considered the source - Rita and determines it's all a pack of lies.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Review - Chapter 1

Harry_potter_and_the_deathly_hallow I finally got a chance to dive into the book in earnest on Sunday afternoon.  Needless to say I'm thoroughly impressed with the book so far.  A promised I am going to blog my impressions of the final book chapter by chapter.  However, I'm not intending to give away any plot twists per se and I don't want to ruin the book for others.

Chapter 1 - The Dark Lord Ascending

Our story begins almost where it left off.  This really does feel like Books 6 and 7 are two halves of the same novel.  Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince really climaxed and ended with the death of Dumbledore at the hands of Severius Snape of its aftermath.

The Deathly Hallows begins with Snape meeting with some fellow death eaters and the Dark Lord himself.  I must admit I felt myself loathing Snape with each turn of the page.  I thought to myself "so we really get to see the real Snape for the total snake in the grass that I always thought him to be".

This was a bit of a different start to a Harry Potter book.  Normally we expect to hear about Uncle Vernon, Dudley and Aunt Petunia and how they've mistreated Harry once again.  This time J.K. Rowling is all business.  Voldemort is beginning his evil reign of terror once again and I can't wait to turn the page....

Harry Potter Deathly Hallows Review and Book Sales

Harry_potterSo the much awaited 7th installment in J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter has finally arrived. After a week of internet spoilers some true and some hoaxes, and of course the big times oops by Deepdiscount.com, the book finally reaches the hands of millions of potter fans. Many people joined the throngs of loyal Potter fans in midnight parties around the country dressed in their Hogwart’s best, but this was just a fraction of the record breaking 8.2 million books sold in the first 24 hours of salves. Breaking that down just a little bit that’s over 340,000 an hour or 5600 every minute. Not bad for a woman who wrote the first book on paper napkins in a coffee shop, while homeless.

In this book we see the story taking another step down a much darker path. With Voldemort in power and Dumbledore dead, Harry faces the daunting task of finding and destroying the remaining Horcruxes – the last task assigned to him by the late Dumbledore. Also thrown into the plot are the Deathly Hallows. Three mythical objects, akin in my opinion to the Holy Grail, when combined are said to grant the person who controls them power over death itself. Harry along with best friends Ron and Hermione must decide between these seemingly different quests only to find that they are very much entwined.

The book is an excellent finish to a riveting series full of twists and turns more surprises than you can shake a wand at. Rowling does not disappoint us with the character development switching from Fred, and Georges antics, to Ron’s sarcasm, to Hermione’s humble brilliance. Also of course is Harry Potter who relates to all of us by of course being your average teenage boy with all the emotions and self doubts that we would feel ourselves placed in such circumstances, yet who also has the courage and strength that make him a true hero. Rowling revisits many of the memories from the first books bringing back characters like Dobby the house elf and Ollivander the wandmaker, and taking us back to locations such as Gringott’s Bank.

In the end we of course have the battle we knew was coming with the forces of good battling the forces of evil. Rowling does not however make it that cut and dry. We learn that there are many shades of grey as Harry himself uses 2 of the three unforgivable curses in his adventure, and some seemingly black characters show us that there is more to them than it first seems. If you haven’t picked up a copy yet or are not a fan of the series I strongly urge you to read these books (Harry Potter). I won’t of course discuss the ending or too many specifics of the book since I don’t want to ruin the ending for true fans, but check back in a week or so and we’ll have more to say …

Also be sure to check out all of Ron's blogs on Harry Potter.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - It's FINALLY here

Harry_potter_and_the_deathly_hall_4 My wait is finally over.  My pre-ordered book from Amazon was hand delivered at 3:23 pm (EDT).  However, I do have one problem.  I'm not going be able to begin reading until later tonight as my wife and I are attending the birthday party of a good friend of ours this evening.    Oh well, I guess my pent up desire to read Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will have to wait a few more hours.... <sigh>....

As promised once I do start reading I'll definitely be blogging about my thoughts as I tear through the book!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - The Waiting..

Harry_potter_deathly_hallows_2 It's H.P. Day.  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows has finally been officially released.  Unfortunately, I do not yet have my copy of the book - 12:19 pm EDT.  I pre-ordered the book from Amazon and the book is out for delivery today however it has not yet arrived.  Needless to say I'm anxiously awaiting it's arrival and getting a little bit impatient.

Of course it doesn't help when everywhere I went today I saw people carrying a copy of the book.  GRRRRR!  Maybe pre-ordering wasn't the way to go.  However, it does beat waiting in line for an hour.

In the meantime I'm going to check out the prices for Harry Potter collectibles on getitnext to see if Harry Potter mania has struck eBay particularly hard today.  I've also been tracking the price of the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows too.  Once I receive my copy I plan to blog about the experience of reading the final book.  I'm not planning to give away any spoilers (I don't want to ruin it for anyone else).  I'll check in later once my book has finally arrived.

    Harry Potter Mania!

Harry_potter Well, I just returned from the midnight release of the seventh and final book in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. I must say, the crowd waiting at Chapters  for Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows was insane! First, when we pulled up it was next to impossible to find a parking spot, and then once we got inside the number of people dressed up waiting for their chance to lay their hands on the "bible" for Potter fans was incredible.

I personally don't think I have ever seen that many people waiting even to see movies (the closest thing I can remember was when Stars Wars Episode I was released). The lineup, as you can imagine, was from one end of the store to the other (and Chapters are not small stores) weaving in and out of every single aisle in the store. Since we arrived at around 12:05 there was a considerable number of people in front of us, and by the time we made it to the front, it was at least 45 minutes. Something that seemed kind of dumb to me was the lineup for pre-order. I would think that if you pre-ordered the book that it would take a lot less time, but at the Chapters I went to, there was a much longer line up than the one for people who didn't pre-order. By the time I was on my way out the door, people were already well into the book, and I am sure that people will be reading throughout the night until it is finished.

It was quite an experience seeing so many people in one place gathering just to lay their hands on a copy of one of the most highly anticipated books ever. Between the invitations to "Harry Potter Parties" and the T.V. interviews that were going on, there was a very unique atmosphere that can only be described as Harry Potter Mania!

    Harry Potter 101

    Harry_potter_books

To everyone who is wondering what the heck is all this Harry Potter fuss about I decided to write a brief Harry Potter 101 to get folks up to speed.

What is Harry Potter all about?  Harry Potter tells the story of an orphan who on upon approaching his 11th birthday discovers that he has magical powers.  As part of this awakening he is summoned to begin his wizarding education at Hogwarts School of Wizarding.

Even more fantastical he discovers that the wizarding world lives right along side the non-wizarding world.  The books tell the story of the adventures that Harry Potter and his friends embark on over the next 7 years.

However all is not well.  Harry very quickly learns that he is a very special person responsible for the demise of the most evil Wizard ever known - Voldemort.  Voldemort's proported demise is premature.  The central theme of the remainder of the series is funneled towards a final confrontation between Harry Potter and the evil Lord Voldemort.

For a very detailed synopsis check out the Wikipedia entry on Harry Potter.

How many books are there?  There are a total of seven books in the series.  The seventh and final book Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is being release on July 21, 2007.  This is cause of all of the hoopla.  This is the final book of this beloved series.

Are the movies different than the books? The movies are faithful to the books to a point.  After all you can only include so much in a 2 hour plus movie.  I'd definitely recommend to someone to read the books.  The movies are good but the good are great!  Thus far the first 5 books have been released as movies.  Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is in theaters now.

What's the difference between the kids version and adult versions of the book?  Very little.  The literary text is exactly the same.  The covers of each version of the book are different.

Why does everyone love this series so much?  Obviously this is a very subjective question.  I think the biggest attraction to the books is that J.K. Rowling has done a masterful job of writing the story in such a way that you really care about a very large group of characters.  You really get to know a lot about all of them.  That's not an easy thing to do.  Normally a book or series focuses on only a small group of people.  J.W. Rowling provides a very of detail and insight to easily 20 people.  The bottomline is that it's just a very good story.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Paranoia

Harry_potter_dont_tell_me1 day and counting... O.K. things are getting a little out of hand in Potterland.  I must say the media frenzy surrounding Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is making me a little paranoid to read anything about Harry Potter least I run into a spoiler unintentionally.  This is just like using my Tivo to record an Oilers hockey game and desparately trying to avoid any hockey scores to ruin watching the game.

I really don't want to know what happens to Harry Potter and the gang before I read the whole book.  That's like turning to the back page to read the ending first.  What's the fun in that?  In fact I'd argue what's the point of evening buying the book if you are going to do that.  Part of the fun of reading a book or seeing a movie for the first time is that you DON'T know what's going to happen next.  I think that's why I enjoy sports so much - you never know what's going to happen next.  So to all of you who find out what happens to Harry first - don't tell me.... I don't want to know.  :-)
