So the much awaited 7th installment in J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter has finally arrived. After a week of internet spoilers some true and some hoaxes, and of course the big times oops by Deepdiscount.com, the book finally reaches the hands of millions of potter fans. Many people joined the throngs of loyal Potter fans in midnight parties around the country dressed in their Hogwart’s best, but this was just a fraction of the record breaking 8.2 million books sold in the first 24 hours of salves. Breaking that down just a little bit that’s over 340,000 an hour or 5600 every minute. Not bad for a woman who wrote the first book on paper napkins in a coffee shop, while homeless.
In this book we see the story taking another step down a much darker path. With Voldemort in power and Dumbledore dead, Harry faces the daunting task of finding and destroying the remaining Horcruxes – the last task assigned to him by the late Dumbledore. Also thrown into the plot are the Deathly Hallows. Three mythical objects, akin in my opinion to the Holy Grail, when combined are said to grant the person who controls them power over death itself. Harry along with best friends Ron and Hermione must decide between these seemingly different quests only to find that they are very much entwined.
The book is an excellent finish to a riveting series full of twists and turns more surprises than you can shake a wand at. Rowling does not disappoint us with the character development switching from Fred, and Georges antics, to Ron’s sarcasm, to Hermione’s humble brilliance. Also of course is Harry Potter who relates to all of us by of course being your average teenage boy with all the emotions and self doubts that we would feel ourselves placed in such circumstances, yet who also has the courage and strength that make him a true hero. Rowling revisits many of the memories from the first books bringing back characters like Dobby the house elf and Ollivander the wandmaker, and taking us back to locations such as Gringott’s Bank.
In the end we of course have the battle we knew was coming with the forces of good battling the forces of evil. Rowling does not however make it that cut and dry. We learn that there are many shades of grey as Harry himself uses 2 of the three unforgivable curses in his adventure, and some seemingly black characters show us that there is more to them than it first seems. If you haven’t picked up a copy yet or are not a fan of the series I strongly urge you to read these books (Harry Potter). I won’t of course discuss the ending or too many specifics of the book since I don’t want to ruin the ending for true fans, but check back in a week or so and we’ll have more to say …
Also be sure to check out all of Ron's blogs on Harry Potter.
