Ingenious Marketing Plan or Evil Enabler: The Heart Attack Grill

The Heart Attack Grill makes other fast food chains look like health food markets in comparison.  At this restaurant, customers are given hospital like wristbands identifying their order by their waitress who is dressed as a nurse. 

On the menu is Single through Quadruple Bypass Burgers.  The latter totals over 8000 calories.  If you should finish your Quadruple Bypass Burger, you are given a free ride in a wheel chair to your car by your “nurse”.   Don’t worry, your vital signs are checked by a scantily clad, non-licensed medic the entire time. 

No salad bar here!  The closest thing to salad you’ll find is lettuce, tomato, onions and pickles on your burger.   However there are two bars: the unlimited “Flat Liner” fries bar cooked in lard and full calorie beverage bar.  Light beer and diet coke are not even an option.  And if that wasn’t indulgent enough, persons willing to weigh in before eating that weigh over 350 pounds get to eat free, every day.  Some may question if this establishment is playing Devil’s Advocate in the war against an obesity epidemic.  Gigantic portions aside, is the marketing plan any different than the Hooters restaurant chain?

McDiet or McGreedy: The McDoug Weight Loss Project

Doug is hoping to be for McDonald’s Corporation what Jarrod was to the Subway chain.  He developed a weight loss program around eating 3 meals a day from McDonald’s.   The thought that immediately comes to mind is Supersize Me, a documentary featuring Morgan Spurlock chronicling the deterioration in his health by maintaining such a diet.  Unlike Morgan, Doug made only “healthy choices” when he ordered at the chain, such as grilled chicken snack wraps and salads.  In addition, he started an exercise regimen that he committed to.

Is it really that surprising that a man who was classified as “obese” on a BMI scale, before he made any changes, lost weight and was in better health eating 3 perfectly portioned meals of salads and grilled chicken every day?  Reading further into his “project”, he was also given a variety of perks such as sponsorship by a gym and a spray tanning establishment.  In addition, he has stated that he wants to pitch ideas of healthy menu offerings to the McDonald’s corporation and write a book about his experience.  I do believe he has potential to make McProfits off his idea that really isn’t all that innovative: smart food choices, normal portions and a consistent exercise plan.

Defend Yourself against Mosquitoes in 2009

As we look forward to longer days and evenings spent leisurely outside, so do the pests that like to nibble on us that could potentially carry health threatening diseases.  Mosquitoes are attracted to body heat and light.  Repellent sprays work by disorienting the insects making them unable to detect where we are.  Sprays are a good option for those on the move.

• Unplug any cell phone chargers when they are not in use. Although they are not charging something, they still use power while sitting idle.

• Do not exceed the amount of napkins you actually need just because they are there.
• If using disposable plates and cutlery, choose to recycle the paper or plastic accordingly rather than sending to landfill through general garbage.
• Use paper bags for carryout, where provided.
• Recycle aluminum cans at designated recycling stations as well as at home.
• Set up home compost, or use community composting stations for organic waste.
