10 Simple Ways to Be Greener

Green-globe Besides reducing our carbon footprint on the earth, going green can save you some green.  Here are a few ideas to get you started:

1. Replace your old incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs which use less energy.

2. Use an aluminum sport bottle and forgo the prepackaged bottled water to reduce the amount of landfill waste. Aluminum bottles do not absorb flavors like traditional plastic sport bottles. Lakin offers many styles.

3. Use grocery tote bags for your weekly shopping trip. Plastic and paper both require non-renewable fuel to be delivered to the store leading to harmful emissions being dispersed into the environment.

4. Install low-flow shower heads, and reduce the amount of time you spend in the shower if even by a few minutes each day - 2 minutes equates to 10 gallons of water. Also, turn the temperature setting down a degree or two on your hot water heater to save on gas or electric costs.

5. Bamboo is a good choice for flooring as well as clothing.  It is a renewable and self sustainable source. Diapers, shirts and even sheets are made from bamboo and are as soft as cotton.

6. Use  biodegradable or organic cleaners. Purchase concentrated forms and dilute in a refillable spray bottle. Concentrates are the most economical option in many cases. Seventh Generation has an extensive line of cleaning products.

7. Consider buying a laptop. They use considerably less energy than a desk-top computer.

8. Use a tire guage to keep the tires on your vehicle properly inflated to optimize gas mileage.

9. Eat less red meat. Cows require more water to grow their feed than other animals. Consider eating one vegan meal a week, and when possible, choose organically grown fruits and vegetables.

10.Consider installing motion sensor LED lights if you have a hard time remembering to shut off the lights.

Very Hungry Caterpillar, Best Google Logo Ever?

Google-Very-Hungry-Caterpillar I always love the different themed logos that Google creates for holidays and events.  Today's Google logo is no exception and is one that really caught be surprise.  Today's logo is extremely creative and could be their best logo ever.  The logo celebrates the 40th birthday of one of the most popular and famous children's books all time, The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

The author and illustrator, Eric Carle, got the idea from a hole punch.  After 40 years, prints in 47 languages, 29 million copies sold, the Very Hungry Caterpillar still sells a copy every 30 seconds.  It also ranks as my favorite kids book and one I love reading to my own kids.

So what do you think of the logo?  Is it Googles best logo ever?

Twilight - The Search for "Breaking Dawn"

My girlfriend got me hooked on the “Twilight” series by Stephenie Meyer. I love to read, but am usually resistant to reading a series of books for fear of missing one, and am also inclined to read two or three books at any given time.

Twilight books I purchased the first book in the series titled “Twilight” over the Christmas holidays and finished it in four days, and I must say I could not put the book down. When I was busy doing other things I simply could not wait to get back to the story of Edward and Bella. I found myself reading the next two books “Eclipse” and “New Moon” in record time. I am now ready to dive into the fourth novel “Breaking Dawn” and cannot find it anywhere.

When I purchased the first three books, I paid under thirty dollars for them combined. I’ve returned to the store where I purchased the others, however, they are currently only selling the books in sets and there are no single “Breaking Dawn” hardcover books to be found. How long will the series clinching episode elude me? Not long, using GetItNext.

Lipstick Jungle - Strong, Sexy and Complicated

LipstickJungle460 My favorite show these days is Lipstick Jungle, from the creator of "Sex and The City",Candace Bushnell. The women in this show are professional women who are strong, sexy and lead very complicated lives.

First, Wendy (Brooke Shields) is married to Shane (Paul Blackthorne), and she was recently let go as President of a major movie studio. Now she is adjusting to life as a stay at home mom with a desperate yearning to get back to work.  Nico Reilly (Kim Raver) had a torrid love affair with Kirby (Robert Buckley) who is half her age when she was still married. Victory Ford (Lindsay Price) is a clothing designer with her own unique style. All three women are bonded together with their great friendship and admiration for one another. They are true friends and can laugh at one another. Check out Season 1 of "Lipstick Jungle" on dvd.

Twilight - Romancing the Vampire

Twilight The roles play by Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise from Interview with a Vampire left us wanting more...more vampire activity, that is.  Years have passed and our desire for the sensual, dark side still remains.  Then along comes Edward Cullen, whose character is based on the Twilight series, to steal our hearts.   Based on the four-book complete set, Twilight has evolved the vampire phenomena to a whole new carnal, yet celibate, level.

Merchandise based on the Twilight movie is appearing on posters, tee shirts and decalsSkins for the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP featuring the movie’s characters are also popular.  Novels about vampires are also being fiercely consumed by devout followers including the original Anne Rice novel: The Vampire Lestat.  And the animated Japanese Vampire Knight series offers an array of fan classics such as comic books, pillows, and jewelry.

Can’t wait for Twilight to be released on DVD?  Watch Interview with a Vampire.  If a more humorous and lighter side to the vampire appeals to you, how about a boxed set of the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer?

The Clone Wars - Star Wars for the Next Generation

When the first Star Wars movie, now officially titled “A New Hope”, was released in theaters in 1977, I was seven years old. “The Empire Strikes Back” followed in 1980, and the original trilogy wrapped up in 1983 with “Return of the Jedi”. I would have given anything for a real lightsaber…come to think of it, I still would! The point is, I grew up with the world George Lucas created at impressionable times in my life. Star wars

The Star Wars universe then produced book after book from imaginative writers such as Timothy Zhan and Kevin J Anderson at a time in my life when I really enjoyed reading. The books I felt, did, and continue to do a fantastic job in furthering the Star Wars tale for those wanting a future-look into the lives of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, and company.

My son is now seven years old, and Star Wars means as much or more to him now, as it did to me all those years ago. That is what I think is one of the most unique characteristics of the Star Wars saga – it spans generations, and in some cases brings generations together. Essentially, the motion picture versions of the original trilogy, in addition to the prequel trilogy, tell the life story of Anakin Skywalker’s Jedi heroism, and his fall from grace to the Dark Side as Darth Vader - albeit a little backward in presentation.

And now, the spin-off story set between the motion pictures “Attack of the Clones” and “Revenge of the Sith”, is the story of the Clone Wars as the latest chapter. Thanks to the two animated dvd’s; “Star Wars Clone Wars – Volumes One and Two”, and the theater-released computer animated “Star Wars - The Clone Wars” prefacing the television series of the same name, my son now wants to either be a Clone Trooper, or a Jedi when he grows up. Well, who am I to stand in his way…provided he can score me that real lightsaber.

GetItNext eBay Seller of the Day - The Book Lady - Dec 4th 2008

GetItNext_sellerofday Today's GetItNext Seller of the Day is The Book Lady.  When I read the email from Maureen I have to admit it brought joy to my heart.  You see, Maureen aka The Book Lady is the prototypical eBay seller that was so common during the early days and helped make eBay the world's greatest marketplace.

Maureen is a not a huge distributor or diamond seller, she is a mother and housewife that is selling her own collection and also some of her relatives cherished memories.  I won't include the personal details as I did not ask permission to post them, all I will say is that she is selling thousands of Life Magazines for a loved one who collected them for many years and hoped they would land in the hands of people who would enjoy and preserve them.  Book_lady

Maureen has been an eBayer since 2000, 100% feedback rating and close to 7000 positives.  In addition to her Time Life Magazine Collection she also has some other eclectic offerings.  We also like the incentive she offerings buyers, order 3 items and she will throw in a 4th item for FREE.   Now that is an incentive that motivates buying.
