Woman Almost Sold 139 Year Old Baseball Card for $10 on eBay

1869-baseball-card Bernice Gallego, a 72 year old antiques seller almost sold a rare 1869 baseball card of the Cincinnati Red Stockings on eBay with a price of $10.

Luckily she realized something might be special about the card when she started getting lots of inquiries and someone wanting to end the auction and buy it immediately.  So she decided to call a friend and he suggested to end the auction before she received any bids.

Lucky for Bernice she did, the card is extremely rare and should fetch 6 figures at auction.   She plans to repost the card on eBay in the future, with a bit more fanfare and perhaps a reserve.  To check out the full story and history of the card, here's a link to the wonderful article by the good folks at the Fresnobee.

New Yankees Stadium Prices are Outrageous

New_yankees_stadium_2 With the new Yankees Stadium less than a year away prices are now posted for premium seats.  With the country in a recession and the New York Yankees not winning a World Series in 8 seasons the Yankees feel compelled to charge the most outrageous prices in all of baseball.  Here's a sample of the prices for the new ballpark:

Legends suite seats: 25 of the closest sections from home plate down each baseline consist of 1800 seats at $500 a pop.  $500 a seat against the Devil Rays or Royals in April, sounds like a grand ole time.

Main Level outdoor suite: the 9 sections of the main level behind home plate, these will run 1200 fans a mere $350 a seat per game.

Terrace Level outdoor suite: the 9 sections of the Terrace level behind home plate, these will cost lucky fans only $100 a seat.  These are basically upper deck seats with a fancy name and a large price tag.

If you just won the lottery, are a Wall Street tycoon or have time on your hands like client #9 here's a link to check out the full amenities and what it will cost next year Yankees premium seating.

For more reasonable prices on seats this year check out Yankees tickets.

A-Rod leads Yankees into 07 MLB Playoffs

050418_arod_vmed_8p_widec On the last day of the regular season, the Yankees can once again celebrate the fact that they will be playing baseball in October. For the  13th straight year, the Yankees will take to the field in a quest to capture the World Series. While the Yankees go into the MLB Playoffs as one of the clear favorites, this was far from the case just a few short months ago. At the end of May, the team was a lousy 8 games below .500 in second last place in the AL East. But then, on came A-Rod!

In 158 games with the team this year, the Yankee third baseman had 183 hits, hit 54 home runs, drove in an incredible 156 runs, and batted an impressive .314. He single handedly took the Yankees on his back, and into October. So after a career season like this one - and with plenty of years still ahead of him - this may be an opportune time to buy Alex Rodriguez cards. More specifically, A-Rod's rookie card is still a steal on eBay but one would expect that to start climbing significantly as A-Rod gets further into his career. This may be a great time to get your hands on one of these cards - especially if A-Rod takes the Yanks all the way to the fall classic!

Barry Bonds on Verge of Breaking Greatest Record in All of Sports

Barry_bonds_755 Love him or hate him Barry Bonds IS going to break the most legendary record in Baseball and arguably in all of sports.  If you haven't done so check out the last Bob Costas Now show on HBO, it features Curt Schilling on steroids and also a panel of Gary Carter, Ozzie Smith and Chris Rock discussing Barry Bonds and also a pretty good interview with the chemist from Balco.

Here is the video of Barry tying legend Hank Aaron.

Check out my blog on who has the best chance of getting the ball if it lands in McCovey Cove Kayak King.  I also have a blog where I talk about How Much Barry Bonds Record Setting Ball could be worth.

Barry Bonds Record Breaking Ball Could Fetch a Million Bucks

Bonds_juiced Love em or hate him, some lucky fan could end up a millionaire. Speculation is building on what Bonds' record breaking and final career home-run balls could fetch on the open market.  The figure is estimated between $400,000 to $1 million.  According to collectibles expert David Kohler, president of SCP Auctions, which handled the February sale of a Honus Wagner baseball card for $2.35 million, the Bonds home run ball # 756 could bring in between $400,000 to $500,000 at auction.

That estimate seems to be a bit low considering the ball Mark McGwire hit to break Roger Maris' single-season home run record sold for $3 million.  However that was a different time in Baseball and collectibles.  That was the summer of the great home run race between McGwire and Sammy Sosa.  Unlike that home run record chase, this record breaking summer has not had the same buzz or feel.   Throughout his career Barry has not been loved by a lot of baseball fans and sports writers due to his antics on and off the field and due to allegations of steroids.   An example of how this hurts the value of the ball is that when Bonds later shattered Mark McGwire's single season home run record by hitting 73 in 2001, that ball was auctioned and only fetched $450,000 compared to the $3 million of Marks ball.

Barry_bonds_traded There's also the fact that No. 756 probably won't remain the record ball. The 43-year-old Bonds will hit more thus #756 will be a big collectible but won't be the final one.  Each subsequent record breaking ball should command around $100,000 at auction.

For those of you with San Fransisco Giants tickets had better play close attention during games.  Remember sometimes luck strikes like when Andrew Morbitzer was standing in the beer line when Bonds hit No. 715 to pass Babe Ruth for second all-time.  The ball landed on a elevated platform, it rolled off the roof and into Morbitzer's hand.  That's called having a good day.

Major League Baseball (MLB) is doing its part to preserve the collectible by swapping balls for each Bonds at-bat. The balls are identified by a numbering system, and each one has a special hologram.

Check out my blog on who has the best chance of getting the ball if it lands in McCovey Cove Kayak King.

Barry Bonds Big Mouth Slams Arod Alex Rodriguez

Bonds_abdulBig mouth Barry Bonds is at it again.  Lately, Barry Bonds has been playing nice with the media and has been polite when questioned about Alex Rodriguez.  The cease fire is over.  In keeping with his legacy destroying history, Barry Bonds slams Alex Rodriguez (Arod) in a story carried by the NY Post

Quoted in the article by the Posts Brian Costello Bonds stated "Is he as good as me? Hell, no," Bonds when asked if Rodriguez was the best player of this generation. "He's better than me now because he's younger than me. But, hell no."

Bonds was later asked if Rodriguez ranks right behind him. "He ain't even second," he said. Bonds said that honor goes to his close friend, Ken Griffey Jr., "but he got hurt."

Check out the Post for the entire article.

Arod to Save Baseball and Collectibles Market

Arod_home_run_king As many of you know Alex Rodriguez hit his 499th home run last night.  Arod is enroute to becoming the youngest player of all time to hit the 500 home run mark.  Why is this important to MLB and collectors?  Well, if he stays on his current pace, Alex will shatter the all time home run record that Barry Bonds is about to set.  Arod is also not tied to the steroid scandal that is a firestorm for MLB as Barry breaks the great Hank Aaron's record.

While I think picking up a couple Barry Bonds rookie cards might be a good short term hold and possibly long term depending on whether he is voted into the Hall of Fame.  I think that Arod's rookie cards could be one of the most sought after collectible of the last 20 years.  He's just turning 32 and he has 500 homers, another healthy 10 years and he will shatter the record and be the savior that MLB needs to get rid of the steroid taint.

Currently his cards command some nice value considering the era from which they hail. The top card for collectors is his SP # 15 which can be very hard to find in top condition, it's a foil card and the edges chip easily.

Listing of Alex Rodriguez 1994 Rookie Cards:
