As many of you know Alex Rodriguez hit his 499th home run last night. Arod is enroute to becoming the youngest player of all time to hit the 500 home run mark. Why is this important to MLB and collectors? Well, if he stays on his current pace, Alex will shatter the all time home run record that Barry Bonds is about to set. Arod is also not tied to the steroid scandal that is a firestorm for MLB as Barry breaks the great Hank Aaron's record.
While I think picking up a couple Barry Bonds rookie cards might be a good short term hold and possibly long term depending on whether he is voted into the Hall of Fame. I think that Arod's rookie cards could be one of the most sought after collectible of the last 20 years. He's just turning 32 and he has 500 homers, another healthy 10 years and he will shatter the record and be the savior that MLB needs to get rid of the steroid taint.
Currently his cards command some nice value considering the era from which they hail. The top card for collectors is his SP # 15 which can be very hard to find in top condition, it's a foil card and the edges chip easily.
