Paul Newman aka Reggie Dunlop Dies at Age 83

Paul Newman, one of the best actors of his generation died of cancer on Friday at age 83.  Paul known for so many other things than acting such as car racing, philanthropy work, political activism will always be remembered fondly by hockey fans as Reggie Reg Dunlop from the gut busting 1976 Movie Slapshot.

There is not a bench in any beer league on the continent that a line from Slapshot is not uttered on a nightly basis.  The cult classic is one the best hockey movies ever made and definitely the funniest of all time.  Slapshot also had a special place in Paul's heart, here is a quote from the Washington Post: Newman hated to see his characters triumph on charm alone. No one, he said, would pay money to see such a beautiful man win the woman and save the day. Off-screen, he mocked his sex-symbol status and said that his personality was closest to the vulgar, second-rate hockey coach he played in "Slap Shot" (1977). His approach likely saved his career as he matured into a disciplined performer, one of the most enduring and polished of screen stars.

Directv Added MSG HD and Fox Sports HD Today!

New York Rangers fans rejoice, we now have options.  As a long time suffering Directv HD sub today is like xmas morning.  I can't believe they finally added it, finally we can watch hockey the way it should be.  Very surprising that the Dolan$ relented and gave in to Directv, must be an offer they couldn't pass up.

If you've tuned to any of these channels and cannot receive them you might not have the proper equipment.  You will need the following in order to receive the new HD channels: a 5 LNB Dish, and one of the following MPEG 4 boxes: a HR-20, HR-21, H-20 or H-21 model.  Without this equipment you will not be able to receive the signal from the new bird.

NHL Network Launching on Directv in HD

There are a lot of rumors floating around so I'll try and separate out facts from speculation:

Fact: The NHL Network has signed a carriage agreement with Directv, click here for the NHL Directv agreeement.

Fact: Directv has no capacity to add the NHL Network in SD, it will supposedly be adding it in 2008.

Fact: Directv is said to be launching the HD version of the NHL Network by the end of October.

Speculation:  Heavy speculation is that the NHL Network will be added for Directv HD subscribers Weds Oct 24th.  Hopefully when subscribers wake up and check their guide it will be appearing on channel 215.

Directv Adds 12 NHL Center Ice HD Channels

Great news hockey fans, Directv has added a ton of NHL-High Definition (HD) channels.  The new channels will mirror the standard definition channels and are numbered: 764-1 to 776-1.

Currently there are no games scheduled but I'm sure they will start adding them in the next couple of days.  To find out about all the new Directv HD Channels check out Directv Expansion blogs.
