Most New York Rangers fans are claiming that the Rangers did well on the last day of the NHL trading deadline. I couldn’t disagree more. Now I’m not knocking the players they got what I’m irritated about is that Slats traded a bluechip prospect Al Montoya for essentially nothing. To trade a former 1st round 6th overall pick for a 4th liner is a travesty.
Take a look at the Rangers history, there are not many times that they’ve ever had a pick as high as a 6th in the last 25 years. Montoya was drafted under Sather’s watch, this was his pick not Neil Smiths. To flip Al at an all time low is an unmitigated disaster. Also interesting is that the GM who picked Slats pocket is his former protégé Don Maloney now GM for the Phoenix Coyotes. It's going to be interesting to watch and see how Montoya develops under coach Gretzky in the desert. Best of luck Al, hopefully you make it to the show soon.
